Articles

Did you wonder what you would find when you clicked on "Articles"? It is not a word you see often when looking at web sites.

What you will see here are articles from magazines and other publications. They will relate almost entirely to African violets, aspects of growing them, the related plants in the gesneriad family and activities our society members get into as a result of being African violet enthusiasts.

We are proud to say that members of Lakeshore African Violet Society of Toronto are frequent and enthusiastic contributors to African violet publications. Not only do they contribute to our own Lakeshore AVS Newsletter, they contribute to publications of other societies that they and we belong to. Examples are Chatter published by the African Violet Society of Canada, African Violet Magazine published by the African Violet Society of America, Inc., and the publications of some regional societies in the United States.

We are proud of our authors and pleased to give them a wider audience by reprinting some of their work on this web site. Any time you visit this page you will find three articles that may be of interest to you. We will rotate the articles at the beginning of every second month so that you will always have something fresh to view each time you visit.

The "specials" for March-April 2013 are:

He is active in community life and this article describes his experience bringing African violet culture to participants in a pain management program.

"In Search of Excellence" by Betty Tapping. Betty has been a long-time member and friend of Lakeshore African Violet Society. Although she has retired from growing African violets she still keeps up her connections with our society and still lives in our community. This article will help growers achieve excellence in their plants with tips from Betty, an excellent grower and exhibitor of African violets.

"Inspired By ..." by Beverley Williams. Until recently a neighbor in nearby Mississauga, Beverley has moved east of Toronto now but still attends meetings of Lakeshore AVS regularly and is our Show Chairman for our annual spring show. In this article she describes her experience using the computer program First Class 2 as an aid in keeping track of her African violet collection, preparing for a show, etc. Read the article to learn where she found her inspiration to do so.
