We always welcome new faces and hope you will join us if you find the subjects of our meetings to be interesting to you. Here is the schedule for this season 2015-2016.
Note that there are no public meetings in June, July or August and the first meeting of the new season will be Friday, September 11, 2015.
The following was drafted by your Executive in August. It is probably pretty reliable but we will update it as needed as times goes by.
Photos of our award-winning show plants at our
spring show.
Leaf exchange. Bring leaves to exchange with
other members in order to enlarge and vary your collection.
Starting a leaf. A demonstration by Vivian
Beeching of starting a leaf for producing new plants.
Restart your dogs. Leave Fido at home. We are
talking about African violets that have gone to the dogs and how to
restart them. The discussion will include potting up, fertilizer, soils,
watering.
Organizing your plant room. This will be a
panel discussion on the best and favourite ways of organizing a plant
room and all it entails.
Christmas Potluck Dinner. Our annual Christmas
celebration with potluck dinner and plant auction with related items as
well as plants.
Lighting for African Violets. Bruce Williams will
talk on many aspects of lighting for African violets and other
gesneriads. We will also have some discussion on pots and tools.
Pest and Disease Problems of African Violets. Jim Toms will speak on the various diseases and insect pests of African violets and methods of dealing with them.
Container Gardens for African violets. We will learn about creating and caring for container gardens with African violets and other gesneriads.
First Class and Show Entries. Julie Thompson and Jim Toms will explain the First Class program. This is a computerized registration program for all varieties of African violets registered with the African Violet Society of America. They will also explain the two show entries programs available for “managing” a show.
Show Preparation. Our annual show is in April
and Doris Brownlie will touch on all angles of show preparation of
interest to our members.
Species and natural hybrids of Saintpaulia
(African violets). Beverley Williams will talk on the many species of
African violets that grow in the African wilds and their natural
hybrids.
Hmm! We don’t seem to have a date for the annual
June awards dinner as yet. We will add it to this list of gatherings
soon.
